How to set up Personalizer
Personalizer lets you display tailored messages based on a visitor’s location, behavior, or shopping journey. Whether you’re highlighting a specific model for returning visitors or targeting shoppers near a competitor’s lot, Personalizer helps turn browsers into qualified leads.
In this article, you’ll learn how to create, configure, and prioritize personalized messages on your website.
To get started
Go to the Cars.com Hub. Click Dealer Inspire, then Manage Website.
1 Access personalizer in the backend
In the backend of your site:
Then click Add New
Click Personalizer from the left-hand menu

2Add your content key
In the Content Key field, enter the exact key that tells the system where the message should appear.
- Homepage → use: Homepage USP
- All VRPs → use: VRP Personalization
Tip: Always copy and paste the key shown below the field to avoid typos or formatting errors.

3 Create your personalizer
- In the content editor, make sure the Visual tab is selected (unless you’re using HTML — then choose Text)
- Add your message text directly in the editor

- To add an image:
- Click Add Media
- Upload or choose from your media library
- Click Insert into post
- Click Add Media

- To hyperlink text or images:
- Highlight the item
- Click the link icon in the toolbar
- Highlight the item
Paste your URL and press Enter (or click the blue arrow)

4Add a tag
In the Tag field:
- Enter a clear, specific label (e.g., Mach-E Incentive, Returning SUV Shoppers)
- This helps you track performance in Google Analytics and organize personalizers in your dashboard

5Set your rules
Use the Rule Editor to determine who will see the message:
- Choose a rule and drag it into the Ruleset box
- Customize dropdowns to match behavior (e.g., returning visitor, interest in a specific model)
- Combine multiple rules using AND or OR logic
- Example: Returning Visitor AND Viewed Ford Mustang Mach-E

6 Set a targeted location (optional)
Scroll to the Geofencing Editor to target users based on location:
- Enter a zip code or address
- Choose your shape (circle or square)
- Right-click the shape to remove it
- Right-click the shape to remove it
- Drag to set your radius
Geofencing is optional but enhances personalization by targeting physical behavior (e.g., someone near your store or a competitor’s lot).

7Publish and test your personalizer
- Scroll to the top and click Publish
- Then click Reload Cache
To test:
- Open an incognito browser window
- Simulate the behavior defined in your ruleset (e.g., return to the site, visit from a set location)
- Combined rules (e.g., location and returning visitor) must be triggered together

8Reorder your personalizers
To control priority:
- Go to Personalizer > Re-Order
- Drag and drop to arrange, putting your most specific or time-sensitive messages first
